When birthday girl Sara Ali Khan said ‘no’ to remakes

Sara Ali Khan marks her 28th birthday. In a 2021 conversation with Deccan Chronicle, Sara elaborated on her decision to move on from acting in remakes, citing lessons learned through personal experience.

During a 2021 interview, Sara was asked about her interest in starring in a remake of any of her mother Amrita Singh’s movies. Her response was unequivocal and clear. She said, “No. I did two remakes in the past 2 years and I know that some films should not be touched. I look like my mother and if I don’t act as well as her, the media will not let me get away with it. I don’t want that.”

The remakes mentioned by Sara include Coolie No 1 and Love Aaj Kal. Coolie No 1, which premiered on OTT in December 2020, was a reimagining of David Dhawan’s 1995 beloved comedy featuring Govinda and Karisma Kapoor in the lead. Helmed by David himself, the remake cast his son in Govinda’s character and Sara in Karisma’s part. Unfortunately, the movie garnered unfavourable reviews upon its OTT release.

Love Aaj Kal, which premiered on Valentine’s Day in 2020, marked a modern rendition of a romantic comedy initially led by Sara’s father, Saif Ali Khan, in 2009. Imtiaz Ali directed both versions, with the original starring Saif alongside Deepika Padukone, which found decent success at the box office. The remake, featuring Sara and Kartik Aaryan in the lead, continued under Imtiaz’s direction. Interestingly, Saif was approached to reprise Randeep Hooda’s role in the remake, but he declined the offer.
