Conservative activist Virginia Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, made another campaign donation, even though her past political activity has raised questions about the impartiality of her husband.
In July, Ginni Thomas contributed $500 to the congressional campaign of Virginia Republican Yesla Vega, according to a recent filing with the Federal Election Commission. Thomas’ donations to Vega’s campaign total $1,000. Vega failed in her attempt to unseat Democratic Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger, winning 48% of the vote compared to Spanberger’s 52%.
Hung Cao, another Republican challenger for Congress in Virginia whom Thomas backed, also lost in a close race. In May, Thomas donated $250 to Cao, who has expressed skepticism about the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Thomas also backed a couple of incumbents, who fared better. Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) each coasted to re-election. Thomas donated $500 to Roy’s campaign and $250 to Lee’s.
Thomas has contributed at least $16,000 to support Republican candidates, according to federal and state records. Her political activity, including attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election, has led to calls that Justice Thomas should recuse himself from some cases or resign altogether.
Ginni Thomas and a spokesperson for the Supreme Court did not respond to requests for comment.
