Bengali singer Anup Ghoshal, renowned for his rendition of the song Tujhse Naraz Nahi Zindagi from the 1983 film Masoom and his contributions to several musicals by Satyajit Ray, passed away on Friday, as confirmed by his family. He was 77 years old.
Anup Ghoshal had been admitted to a private hospital in south Kolkata for the past several days, undergoing treatment for age-related ailments. Unfortunately, he succumbed to multi-organ failure at 1:40 pm.
Anup Ghoshal, born in 1945, received his first introduction to music during his childhood from his mother, Labanya Ghoshal. Subsequently, he pursued his musical education, learning classical music from Pt Sukhendu Goswami. His dedication and talent led him to achieve the top position in MA classical music at Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata.
Anup Ghoshal showcased his musical prowess in diverse genres, excelling in songs by Kazi Nazrul Islam, Rabindranath Tagore, and contemporary Bengali compositions. Renowned as a playback singer, he notably contributed to Satyajit Ray’s classics, including Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne (1969) and Hirak Rajar Deshe (1980). His vocals graced other notable films like Fuleswari, Marjina Abdalla, and Chhadmabeshi. One of his most beloved renditions was the soulful Tujhse Naraz Nahi Zindagi in Gulzar’s Masoom. Ghoshal’s musical repertoire extended beyond Bengali and Hindi films, encompassing diverse Indian languages such as Assamese and Bhojpuri.
