Thoughtful or Thoughtless? – The Economic Times


Being thoughtful is generally considered to be a mark of human ingenuity, as the best of creative solutions and noble actions originate from our mind. Excitement generated as an outcome of our achievements does create happiness, but only for a short while.

Our mind is a double-edged sword. If channelised in the positive direction, it can work wonders, else, it can be a devil’s workshop. Whether the mind is in a creative mode or otherwise, in a waking or dreaming state, it is always loaded with thoughts. The nonstop streaming of thoughts can come down heavily on our mind like a tonne of bricks, resulting in mental fatigue. Since it is a continuous process, we rarely experience mental peace.

If being ‘ thoughtful’ can bring around so much misery at the mental level, will the state of ‘thoughtlessness’ be like the ‘weightlessness’ experienced by astronauts while in space after escaping the Earth’s gravitational force? Our learned sages found an answer to this. The ‘Bhagwad Gita’ prescribes the paths of karma, bhakti and gyan yog to bring down mental agitations and render the mind fit for meditation by focusing on a single thought at a time.

By pursuing these practices regularly and meditating daily early in the morning, gradually, one is likely to experience eternal bliss as evident in the serene disposition of the spiritually evolved souls. So, is being in the state of ‘thoughtlessness’ not a better proposition than being in the state of ‘thoughtfulness’?
