This actress candidly discussed her views on love and relationships. She admitted to having been in multiple relationships simultaneously.
She is one of the finest actresses, a powerhouse of talent in the film industry today. Known for her powerful performances and unconventional roles, she has carved her niche with sheer talent and determination. Born on January 10, 1984, in Pondicherry, her journey to stardom was anything but typical. Though she was born in India, her parents are French, and she grew up in the multicultural environment of Auroville. After her parents’ divorce, she moved with her mother to Kallatty, Tamil Nadu, and later attended Hebron School in Ooty, where her love for acting began. She pursued her passion by studying drama in London and working with a theatre company. In search of opportunities, she eventually moved to Mumbai, where her acting career took flight.
Her breakthrough came with her debut in Dev.D (2009), where her portrayal of Chandramukhi was both bold and refreshing. The role earned her critical acclaim and a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. From there, she starred in notable films like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), Margarita with a Straw (2014), and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), solidifying her position in the industry.
Beyond her remarkable career, her love life has been equally intriguing. She met acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap during the filming of Dev.D, her debut movie, directed by him. Their professional collaboration blossomed into a friendship that soon turned into love, despite their 14-year age gap. We are talking about Kalki Koechlin. The couple tied the knot in a quiet ceremony in Ooty in 2011. However, their relationship didn’t saw a future, and after two years of marriage, they separated and finalised their divorce in 2015. She said, “The struggles never really end. When my ex-husband and I separated, I had to deal with the rumors. Every time I stepped out with a man, the media thought we were dating. Journalists would ask how my life was post-divorce, how was I handling my career and balancing it? Even concerned neighbours would ask my parents such questions. But I chose to ignore it.”

In an interview with Hauterfly, Kalki candidly discussed her views on love and relationships. She admitted to having been in multiple relationships simultaneously during her teens. Kalki stated that polyamory, or being in multiple romantic relationships at once, is a personal choice, emphasising the importance of boundaries and rules within such dynamics. She also noted that marriage and parenthood bring different responsibilities, leaving little room for such lifestyles.
She in an earlier interview with Humans of Bombay, talked about her struggles in childhood and how she worked as an waitress to sustain herself. “I had an amazing childhood. For the most part, I was never aware that I was ‘white’. I didn’t feel like an outsider until much later. As I grew up, I noticed the difference. When I was a teenager, my friends & I would go on trips to the beach & people would approach me to buy drugs. I also had a nagging fear that I was being hit on because people thought I didn’t follow Indian customs. So I’d be extra nice with the aunties–make sure they knew I was just like my friends. As the years went by I realised I wanted to be an actor & went abroad to study. To sustain myself, I worked as a waitress & taught in schools while trying to juggle plays. Once I knew I was ready–I moved back home”, she told the portal.
In 2019, Kalki made headlines when she announced her pregnancy with her boyfriend, Guy Hershberg, an Israeli classical pianist. On February 7, 2020, she welcomed her daughter, Sappho, embracing motherhood without being married at the time. While her decision to have a child outside of marriage invited criticism, Kalki stood her ground, saying she valued her personal choices over societal expectations.
Koechlin, in 2015, founded her own theatre production company, Little Productions.
