The historical-based film was released on the occasion of Independence Day, and Chiyaan Vikram starrer got a massive response for his unwavering character in Thangalaan. According to fans, the film was all over a decent film, with a gripping storyline, and subtle background music by GV Prakash. An X/ Twitter user commented, “Really liked #Thangalaan although it fell short of greatness due to the hit & miss writing in 2nd half. Chiyaan is amazing, Malavika Mohanan much better than expected, and Pasupathi doesn’t have much to do. Sound Design & GVPrakash’s Background Score rocked. Not everyone’s cup of tea.”

Talking to HT Times, Pa Ranjit said, “It’s an interesting film that takes place during the colonial period. It’s set in the KGF gold mines and about the freedom the oppressed people, who worked in the mines, wanted. Was their leader able to fulfill their wishes? The story revolves around this.”
