While the 2022 Art Basel Miami Beach main fair will showcase themes that include re-thinking historical narratives, the power of ideology, the human form, and violence— pressing global issues will be highlighted at the different fairs throughout this year’s Miami Art Week.
At Art Miami, British digital-printmaker Phil Shaw’s limited edition run of charity prints, “Solidarity-Cолідарність,” was created to raise funds for the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. When read together, the titles of each book— arranged to form the Ukrainian flag— become poignant commentaries on the urgent situation.

New York-based Armenian visual artist Tigran Tsitoghdzyan will showcase an image of a Ukrainian model with an overlay of Ukrainian text. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this work will benefit the Ukrainian Women’s Fund.

Ukrainian-American Lina Condes, known for her stick figure sculptures, will be showing her work, “The Thinker,” crafted from stainless steel. The piece was completed in Kiev, with the war happening around her.

At Aqua Art Miami, a non-profit art organization run by Ukrainian National Tatyana Okshteyn, in collaboration with Black & White Project Space, will showcase “Buy An Icon, Save A Life In Ukraine,” a conceptual project by Ukrainian artists Sonia Atlantova and Olexander Klimenko, at the Aqua Hotel’s courtyard.
At Untitled Fair Miami Beach, the artist collective For Freedoms News, will lead a reimagining of television news as well as an art installation, performance, and conversation, encouraging creative civic participation on their special report, “Eyes on Iran.” This will take the form of an interview area/news set in front of one of the designated walls as well as a performance of roving “reporters on the street” recording live throughout the fair. FFN will engage artists, collectors, dealers, press and other fairgoers about art, politics and society. “Eyes on Iran” in Miami will coincide with a multimedia art installation in Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park in New York, as well as flying artist billboards “Eyes in the Sky’”across South Beach and New York City in partnership with Vital Voices and the Woman, Life, Freedom global coalition of Iranian women leaders.

In addition, Sarai Gallery (Saradipour), based out of Mahshahr, Iran, is also participating this year, showcasing Iranian painter Shiva Noroozi, whose works primarily feature portraits and human figures.

The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU in South Beach is hosting a new exhibition, “Lady Liberty: A Bonnie Lautenberg Retrospective,” (running through March 26). The solo museum show by the artist, photographer and writer celebrates powerful images of women from two decades. Spanning her multiple series of photography and conceptual art, the women in these works are admired by Lautenberg for their spirit of freedom and the exhibition includes her portrayals of the Statue of Liberty confronting some of today’s most challenging issues. “Guns Kill,” was created to benefit the Foundation of Gabby Giffords, dedicated to saving lives from gun violence.
