Student of The Year: Mahesh Bhatt Says Alia Bhatt ‘Was Just a Mannequin’ in Her Debut Film

Alia Bhatt’s father Mahesh Bhatt wasn’t a big fan of Student of the Year, but he did enjoy her daughter’s roles in Highway and Udta Punjab.

After a difficult journey, Alia Bhatt emerged as a renowned performer who has won many National Awards and starred in various successful motion pictures. In 2012, she made her adult acting debut in the film Student of the Year. Mahesh Bhatt, her father, believed that Shanaya Singhania, the character played by Karan Johar in the film, was ‘just a mannequin,’ even while everyone enjoyed her debut role.

The renowned director discussed his daughter’s roles in a few of her films with India Today. Mahesh Bhatt praised Alia’s performance in movies such as Highway and Udta Punjab, saying he was taken aback by how effortlessly his daughter, who grew up in Mumbai’s metropolitan setup, could pull off the local accent and portray a migrant worker.

Mahesh congratulated his daughter on her ‘raw power’ and her capacity to ‘get into such a vulnerable space, and bare her heart’ for Udta Punjab. He did, however, closely examine Alia Bhatt’s role in her feature debut SOTY. Her roles in the aforementioned movies were a change from the girl who was ‘just a mannequin in Student of the Year.’ In addition, her father praised her revolution and said he was happy to witness it in his daughter.

“I must say that I was devastated by Udta Punjab.’ Bhatt added that he didn’t understand when this Juhu girl got the accent right of an Adivasi from Chhattisgarh. It was amazing. I was astounded by that. Her raw power, and her ability to get into such a vulnerable space, and bare her heart. Highway and Udta Punjab… It was a departure from that girl who was just a mannequin in Student of the Year. You see the evolution in your child also.”
