NEW DELHI: The government on Sunday appointed Karnataka cadre IPS officer Praveen Sood as the next director of Central Bureau of Investigation. Sood, a 1986 batch officer, is currently the director general of police (DGP) of Karnataka, which will get a new Congress government after the BJP was voted out.
As per the government order, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved Sood’s name “based on the panel recommended by the committee” as the CBI chief for two years from the date of assumption of charge. The tenure of incumbent CBI director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal ends on May 25.
On Saturday, a panel comprising the PM, the CJI and the leader of Congress in Lok Sabha had shortlisted names of three senior IPS officers for the post of CBI director and the recommendation was sent to the ACC.
In March, Karnataka Congress president D K Shivakumar had called Sood “nalayak” (useless), alleging that he had filed “more than 25 cases” against Congress while protecting BJP leaders. “Immediately, there should be a case against him and he should be arrested. The Election Commission should remove him. Let our government come, we will take action against him,” Shivakumar had said.
Sood is the third IPS officer of Karnataka cadre to be appointed as CBI chief. The other two were Joginder Singh and D R Karthikeyan.
Hailing from Kangra in Himachal Pradesh, Sood did his graduation from IIT-Delhi and joined the IPS at the age of 22 in 1986. He started his career as assistant superintendent of police (Mysuru) in 1989 and later served as the SP of Ballari and Raichur before getting transferred to Bengaluru as deputy commissioner of police (law and order). Sood’s blog page mentions that he was posted as police commissioner of Mysuru from 2004 to 2007 and during this stint, he was instrumental in the arrest of Pakistani-origin terrorists. Sood was appointed Karnataka DGP in January 2020, superseding 1985-batch IPS officer Ashit Mohan Prasad.
