Shahid Kapoor, despite being the son of Pankaj Kapoor and Neelima Azeem, considers himself an outsider in Bollywood. In a recent interview with Neha Dhupia on her chat show, Shahid discussed his journey into the Hindi film industry without parental assistance, highlighting the challenges he faced, including bullying, and his resolve to no longer tolerate it.
Shahid Kapoor also discussed his move from Delhi to Mumbai and how he felt like the odd one out at school because of the way he spoke. He mentioned that he has often been perceived as an outsider for most of his life.
He recalled saying, “We were living in a rented house so every 11 months, we would shift. I would be in a new building, trying to make friends with people who didn’t know me. I went to Shiamak (Davar) and college, and that’s where I finally felt accepted and I had my own group of people and then I became an actor.”
Talking about how he was treated in the Hindi film industry, Shahid said, “I came into this industry and realised ye toh school ke tarah hi hai. Outsiders are not accepted easily here. They have a big issue with how did you manage to come in here. So, for many years I dealt with that. I don’t like this campy thing.”
“I think people who want to creatively collaborate with each other should, people who are comfortable with each other should. But that doesn’t mean you diss other people and try to put other people down or close the doors to other people. And I think that as a teenage or young adult I didn’t have the confidence to fight back but now, if you try to bully me, I will bully you right back. I will bully the bully because they deserve it,” he added.
Meanwhile, on the work front, Shahid will next be seen in Rosshan Andrews’s Deva alongside Pooja Hegde.
