India is slowly moving in the right direction when it comes to the LGBTQIA community, however still there is a long way to go till one can rest. Several problems are faced by queer folks in India today and there is no denying that, be it the struggle to come out to their families or have the right to marry who they love. Tushar Tyagi has made a film on this issue itself called Saving Chintu and the good news is that the film is in the race to win an Oscar this year under the Live Action Short category.
The film has been produced by Ritika Jayaswal and Adil Hussain and stars Sachin Bhatt, Angad Dev Dogra, Adil Hussain and Dipannita Sharma in crucial roles. Saving Chintu revolves around the life of a queer couple who flies down to India from New York to adopt a child named Chintu who’s suffering from HIV-AIDS. The story of the queer couple runs parallel to that of a doctor and his wife who also want to adopt a child.
The film surely has been successful in projecting the emotional complexities of the protagonists and movingly bring forth the challenges a queer couple has to face if they ever decide to start a family. Saving Chintu also gives a little ray of hope about love triumphing over all and coming out victorious in the end. This impressive film has been screened at several film festivals including the Iris Prize LGBT+ Film Festival, South Asian Film Festival of Cincinnati and more and is now in the running to grab an Oscar this year. We wish the team of the film all the very best for the same and hope they make the cut. Check out the trailer of the film below…
