NEW DELHI: The Russian embassy here has taken up with the MEA the detention of a Russian cargo ship by Indian authorities in Kochi saying the same ship was used to deliver military cargo for Indian armed forces. The ship was apparently detained because of claims by an Estonian company that the owner of the ship owed money to it.
The embassy said it had sent to the external affairs ministry an official request for “explanation of the circumstances of the incident” and that it had also asked the ministry to ensure “unconditional observance” of the rights of the Russian ship owners and crew.
The Kerala high court had ordered detention of the Russian ship after an admiralty suit was filed by an Estonian shore service company, Bunker Partner OU. There was no response from MEA till late in the evening. “The Russian embassy is aware of the ship detention, on board of which a military cargo for the Indian Armed Forces was delivered,” said the embassy.
“As per the preliminary information, these actions are connected with the claim of Bunker Partner OU, which claimed that the owners of the ship allegedly had a debt. We would like to underline that the court allowed the unloading of cargo, since it has nothing to do with the lawsuit,” it added.
