Jio and other telcos have added more subscribers while some have seen a drop
Jio leads the mobile subscriber base in India and its continued growth has helped its top position in the Delhi-NCR region as well, TRAI says in its latest data.
Reliance Jio continues its leadership position in the Indian mobile sector with more than 35 lakh subscribers added to the network in February 2024, as highlighted in the latest data by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Monday.
In addition to this, Reliance Jio also managed to keep its top position in the Delhi-NCR circle which has now crossed 2 crore-subscriber mark during the period, thanks to the 2.07 lakh subscriber addition during the month, the TRAI data adds. The mobile network ecosystem now has three major telecom players, Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea with 467 million, 262 million, and 126 million, respectively, while the likes of BSNL have 20 million subscribers on its network.
The TRAI data also points out that the total wireless subscribers increased from 1,160.71 million at the end of January 2024, to 1,164.64 million at the end of February this year.
Both urban and rural areas have seen an increase in the subscription of mobile subscribers, which suggests more people are finally upgrading to the latest networks. Vodafone Idea continues to see its subscriber base falling, as Jio and Airtel continue to add to their subscriber numbers.
For Jio, the growth and leading position in the Delhi-NCR region suggests the services have picked up traction, which appeals to more smartphone users. Having said that, Jio also has its JioPhones available in the market that could be helping the reach and growth of its subscriber base.
Jio has the market leading 40.15 percent share, while Airtel now has 32.97 percent share, and Vodafone Idea caters to 18.93 percent share in the sector. BSNL, MTNL and Reliance Comm continue to have a miniscule share in the telecom segment.
