At the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, Rani Mukerji revealed she suffered a miscarriage during her second pregnancy amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. She lost her baby five months into her pregnancy.
She said, “Maybe this is the first time I am making this revelation because in today’s world, every aspect of your life is discussed publicly, and becomes an agenda for talking about your film to get more eyeballs. Obviously, I didn’t speak about this when I was promoting the film because it would have come across as me trying to speak about a personal experience that would propel the film… so, it was around the year when Covid-19 struck. It was 2020. I got pregnant with my second baby at the end of 2020 and I unfortunately lost my baby five months into my pregnancy.”
Rani further stated that Nikhil Advani, who is one of the producers of the movie Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway, contacted her in 2020 just 10 days after she had a miscarriage. She said that although she did not need to experience the loss of a child to relate to the film emotionally, sometimes a movie comes at the right time when you can connect with it instantly based on your personal experiences. When she heard the story, she was shocked because she never imagined that an Indian family would have to face such a situation in a country like Norway.
For the unversed, Rani Mukerji essayed the role of Debika Chatterjee, a mother who fights the Norwegian foster care system and legal machinery to win back the custody of her children. The film was based on the real-life story of Sagarika Chakraborty and her book The Journey of a Mother. Helmed by Ashima Chibber, Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway also featured Neena Gupta, Jim Sarbh and Anirban Bhattacharya, among others.
