Amitabh Bachchan, often hailed as the “Shahenshah of Bollywood,” has enjoyed a legendary career that spans decades. Yet, behind his illustrious success, few are aware of the harrowing financial crisis he faced in the late 1990s. At the audio launch of Vettaiyan, superstar Rajinikanth opened up about one of the darkest phases of Amitabh Bachchan’s life and how he triumphed over adversity with sheer grit and determination.

According to India Today, Rajinikanth shared a poignant story about how Amitabh Bachchan’s production company, Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL), went bankrupt, leaving the actor saddled with a staggering Rs 90 crore in debt. The financial strain was so intense that even Bachchan’s iconic Juhu bungalow, Prateeksha, was on the verge of being auctioned off. Rajinikanth revealed that, rather than receiving support, Bollywood ridiculed Big B during this trying time.

“When Amit Ji was producing films, he suffered huge losses. He couldn’t even pay his watchman. His Juhu home was put up for public bidding. The entire Bollywood was laughing at him. It’s sad, but the world often waits for your downfall,” Rajinikanth said.

Despite the immense pressure, Amitabh refused to give up. Rajinikanth praised Bachchan’s remarkable comeback, which began within just three years. Big B’s return to prominence started with brand endorsements and his iconic role as the host of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), which became an instant sensation. Not only did KBC revive his career, but it also helped him pay off his debts and reclaim his property, including his beloved Juhu bungalow.

“In just three years, he worked tirelessly, did advertisements, and earned money through KBC. Not only did he clear his debts, but he also bought back his home and even added two more houses on the same street. Amitabh Bachchan is a true inspiration,” Rajinikanth remarked.

Rajinikanth also reflected on Amitabh’s humble beginnings. Despite being the son of legendary poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan, Big B carved his own path in the industry without relying on family connections. Rajinikanth further shared an interesting anecdote about Amitabh’s connection with former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. “When Amit Ji had a near-fatal accident during the filming of Coolie, Indira Gandhi returned from an international conference to visit him. That’s when people realized Amitabh and Rajiv Gandhi were classmates,” Rajinikanth recalled.

Amitabh Bachchan’s journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of hard work. Even at the age of 82, he continues to work relentlessly, delivering unforgettable performances. His inspiring rise from financial turmoil to reclaiming his throne in Bollywood serves as a beacon of perseverance.

As Vettaiyan marks the reunion of Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth after 32 years, fans are eagerly anticipating the chance to witness these two cinematic legends share the screen once more.
