Priyanka Chopra Jonas shared about her experience with a botched nose surgery that plunged her into a severe bout of depression and made her fear for her career. The surgery was performed after she won the Miss World 2000 crown. In a recent interview, Priyanka referred to this period as a ‘dark phase’ in her life.
Following her victory at the Miss World pageant in 2000, Priyanka Chopra experienced breathing difficulties and a persistent head cold. Seeking medical attention, she was advised by a doctor to undergo surgery to remove a polyp in her nasal cavity. However, the operation resulted in a botched procedure where the surgeon unintentionally shaved the bridge of her nose, leading to its collapse and a change in her appearance. This caused her to spiral into a “dark phase” and fall into a deep depression as she feared her nascent acting career was ‘over before it started’.Priyanka also revealed that she was let go from three film projects due to her changed appearance.
In the interview, she also spoke about her late father Ashok Chopra, a doctor in the Indian Army who had encouraged her to get a collective surgery. She said, “This thing happens, and my face looks completely different, and I went into a deep, deep depression… it was over before it started. I was terrified of that, but he was like, ‘I will be in the room with you’,”
Crediting filmmaker Anil Sharma who cast her as a supporting character. Priyanka said, “I was supposed to play this lead, and I was shifted to a supporting character. That filmmaker (Anil Sharma) was very kind… He, while the tide was against me, said, ‘It will be a small part, but give it your all.’ And I did.” In 2003, Anil directed Priyanka’s first Hindi film, The Hero: Love Story of a Spy.
