Premier League power rankings: Diogo Jota leads new entrants but does Harry Kane nab top…

Each week throughout the 2020-21 season, Sportsmail will bring you a Power Rankings table, listing the top-10 hottest players in the Premier League.

As the stories of the season unravel, the rankings will provide a form guide with players moving in and out of the top 10 depending on both their performances in the previous fixtures and also in recent weeks.

Game week seven brought more drama and plenty of goals again as the Premier League table starts to take shape.

James Ward-Prowse and Danny Ings’ performances at Aston Villa was one of the highlights while Chelsea once again kept a clean sheet with Edouard Mendy between the sticks.

There were more goals for Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and Dominic Calvert-Lewin but Son Heung-min drew a blank this time while Diogo Jota continued to prove that he was a shrewd signing by Liverpool, making another telling contribution against West Ham.

With all of that in mind, how do Sportsmail’s latest batch of Power Rankings look?

10. Diogo Jota – (new entry)

The Liverpool winger has been in such a rich vein of form, it would be criminal to leave him out of our rankings this week.

In fact, Jota has been so good that even Jurgen Klopp must be contemplating starting him over the ever-trustworthy Roberto Firmino, who is yet to really get going this season.

Some eyebrows were raised when Liverpool paid over £40m to bring in Jota. who would invariably play second fiddle to the brilliant Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Firmino.

Diogo Jota’s Liverpool career has taken flight as he made another significant contribution

But boy does he look like smart business now.

He has settled in quickly and made a real impact since joining, following up last week’s winner against Sheffield United with another one to hand Liverpool three points against West Ham.

You can’t put a price on that.

9. Youri Tielemans – (new entry)

When Youri Tielemans is on song there are few midfielders in the Premier League better than him.

In what was supposed to be a tricky trip to Elland Road, Tielemans dictated the play and inspired Leicester to a resounding victory.

The 23-year-old showed a striker’s instinct to follow up Jamie Vardy’s saved effort to tap in to score Leicester’s second before later dispatching a penalty with the coolness of a cucumber.

Tielemans has been one of Leicester’s most consistent performers this season but he turned it up a notch on Monday night and deservedly breaks into our top 10 off the back of his display at Leeds.

8. James Ward-Prowse – (new entry)

If there was ever a lesson on how to strike a dead ball perfectly, James Ward-Prowse provided it on the weekend.

The Saints man exhibited his ridiculous technical ability from set-piece situations with two wonder strikes at Aston Villa.

The first was a well-placed whipped effort from around 25-30 yards out and had Emiliano Martinez – who was recently himself in this list in light of his fine form – beaten all ends up.

If that wasn’t impressive enough, Ward-Prowse then repeated the feat from just outside the box, somehow managing to get it up and over the wall and picking out the corner.

Martinez this time was rooted to the spot. What can you do he must have been thinking. It really was a beautiful strike.

As well as his goals, the midfielder’s general play was good as he helped his side edge out Aston Villa in a seven-goal thriller.

7. Patrick Bamford – (down three)

The in-form man was not at his best on Monday night as he failed to find the target in a heavy defeat against Leicester.

Patrick Bamford’s confidence would have been sky high after that ruthless display at Aston Villa last week but he was brought crashing back down to earth as he was well marshalled by Leicester’s defence.

There was a glorious chance in the first half when the ball was put on a plate for him to head home.

And given the form he is in, he would have been expected to bury it but he uncharacteristically spurned the opportunity, heading straight at Kasper Schmeichel in goal.

His failure to score sees him slip down the pecking order here and he’ll need an improved performance next week if he wants to remain in the top 10.

6. Edouard Mendy – (up four)

Sorry, but Kepa Arrizabalaga isn’t getting back into the Chelsea side anytime soon is he?

Frank Lampard knew the goalkeeper position was a huge problem and Edouard Mendy has so far proven to be a brilliant solution.

The summer signing is yet to concede a single goal in his five games for Chelsea and kept another clean sheet at the weekend in their impressive 3-0 victory over Burnley.

Mendy has looked assured and has given Chelsea a lot more stability at the back.

Against Burnley, he was rarely called into action but was always answer to it when he was.

Mendy did have one shaky moment when he went in with a rash challenge on Ashley Barnes in the penalty area, but he got away with it.

But overall he has made an outstanding start to his life in England and it is no coincidence that Chelsea’s defensive record has drastically improved since he took over as No 1.

5. Jamie Vardy – (up two)

Leicester’s hitman was back doing what he does best on Monday night, scoring his side’s third in a 4-1 win.

Vardy had rather unselfishly opted against shooting to set up Harvey Barnes for their opener in the first half but would take full advantage when he got his chance later on.

In the right spot at the right time – as he so often is – Vardy was on hand to tap into an empty net after Cengiz Under had cleverly lofted a pass over the out-rushing Leeds goalkeeper.

It was Vardy’s seventh goal in six Premier League matches and his second in successive games.

At 33, Vardy is showing no signs of slowing down and will quickly climb up our rankings if he continues this prolific run of form in front of goal.

4. Son Heung-min – (down two)

It’s rare these days that a Premier League weekend goes by without Son Heung-min getting in on the action, but there was no joy for him this time.

In the first Premier League game for a month, Son drew a blank with Harry Kane and Gareth Bale grabbing the goals for Tottenham in a 2-1 win over Brighton.

Son’s goal return has been superb this season, which has seen him draw comparisons with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

And with Kane already firing and Bale now up and running, Tottenham have a really potent attacking force on their hands.

The South Korean drops two places this week but with West Brom up next, he’ll fancy his chances of extending his goal tally and moving back in the right direction in our power rankings.

3. Danny Ings – (up two)

Since the start of last season, no one has scored more goals from outside the box in the Premier League than Danny Ings.

That may sound startling but it’s really no surprise if you look at how well he took his goal against Villa on the weekend.

Receiving the ball from 25 yards out, Ings shifted the ball on to his right foot within a blink of an eye and whipped an effort in off the crossbar in clinical fashion.

The Southampton marksman has continued where he left out last season with five goals from his first seven league games.

Ings hobbled off after an injury scare late on against Villa – but thankfully for Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, scans have indicated no serious damage to his knee.

2. Dominic Calvert-Lewin – (up one)

After last week’s failure to score, normal service was resumed for Dominic Calvert-Lewin at Newcastle.

The striker’s incredible start to the season carried on on the weekend as he scored his eighth Premier League goal.

Unfortunately for Everton, it ended up only being a consolation as they fell to back-to-back defeats for the first time under Carlo Ancelotti.

Callum Wilson, who wasn’t far off a place in our top 10, netted a double before Calvert-Lewin’s late strike to ensure the points would stay with Newcastle.

England international Calvert-Lewin has barely been out of the top three all season but Everton face Manchester United next and with other strikers scoring for fun, he can’t afford to let up.

Ancelotti will know the striker’s red-hot form will be crucial for Everton if they are to return to winning ways, too.

1. Harry Kane – (up one)

Harry Kane nabs our top spot this week as he invariably made another significant impact for Tottenham.

When Kane isn’t scoring he’s assisting and when he’s not assisting he’s scoring.

Last week he set up a goal but this week the provider turned goalscorer as he reliably converted from the penalty spot to help Tottenham overcome Brighton.

It’s taken his goal tally for the season to six – just two behind the number of assists he’s already registered.

There really isn’t much this man can’t do on a football pitch and he will take some knocking off the top spot.
