The Philadelphia Union‘s Twitter account was quickly made to regret a tweet jokingly comparing defender Jack Elliott to Gareth Bale during the latter stages of extra time.
Center back Elliott miraculously scored his second goal of the match in the 124th minute and looked to have handed the Union – who were playing a man up after Maxime Crepau’s red card – their first MLS Cup.
Following Elliott’s close-range finish after an Andre Blake save, the Union’s account tweeted, ‘JACK ELLIOTT>>> GARETH BALE’- an apparent claim that the London-born defender was better than the Wales captain.
The now-deleted tweet jokingly suggested Jack Elliott is better than Gareth Bale
However lighthearted the tweet may have been, it looked foolish just four minutes later.
Bale saved the game for LAFC in the 128th minute with a thumping header, as Diego Palacios scampered down the left and delivered the ball for the Welshman to head home.
From there, the game went on to penalty kicks, where the Union were unable to keep up with LAFC, who scored three kicks to Philly’s zero and won their first MLS Cup.
Elliott scored twice in the match and looked to have given Philly the Cup with his goal in the 114th minute
But Bale scored a header just four minutes later and LAFC went on to win via penalties
While the Union’s ill-fated tweet is no longer online, the reactions of LAFC fans to the epic jinx have gone nowhere.
‘Gareth Bale scored directly after this tweet,’ one fan said in response to the deleted barb.
‘Just decided to repost this for no particular reason,’ one fan cracked along with a screenshot of the deleted tweet. ‘Did you delete yours @PhilaUnion?’
Bale’s goal helped LAFC to their first MLS Cup since the expansion club began play in 2018.
The Welshman will now turn his focus to the World Cup, with Wales beginning their tournament on November 21 vs. the United States,.
