BJP criticises Congress for comments on Hemant Karkare’s death, alleging a clean chit to Pakistan over 26/11 attacks

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday ripped into the Congress party following controversial remarks made by its leader Vijay Wadettiwar concerning the death of Maharashtra police officer Hemant Karkare during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.

The sharp criticism came after Wadettiwar alleged that Karkare was not killed by Pak terrorist Ajmal Kasab but by an officer affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Wadettiwar’s unsubstantiated claim sparked widespread condemnation from several leaders of the state. Earlier, Wadettiwar reportedly said that the shooting of Karkare was carried out on the instructions of the RSS, a claim vehemently denied by the BJP.

‘Clean chit to Pakistan’

‘Who Killed Karkare’

In the wake of criticism, Wadettiwar cited a book authored by retired police officer SM Mushrif, titled “Who Killed Karkare,” as the basis for his claims. The BJP, in strong opposition to Wadettiwar’s statements, accused the Congress of prioritising vote bank politics over national security.

Accusing Congress of giving Pakistan a “clean chit,” BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala condemned the party for questioning the patriotism of figures like Ujjwal Nikam, who is a BJP candidate for the Mumbai North Central Lok Sabha constituency. In Nagpur, the BJP’s legal cell filed a complaint against Wadettiwar for his remarks, deeming them “shameful and derogatory.”

“No wonder Pakistan is praying for Congress & Rahul Congress is again putting Votebank Rajniti above Rashtraniti After crying for Batla, Afzal,Yakub , Naxals and labelling them Shaheed now doubting patriots like Ujjwal Nikam & clean chit to Pak ! Bharat won’t ever forget these traitors,” Poonawala wrote on X.

‘Not my words’

Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis both condemned Wadettiwar’s statement, with Fadnavis accusing the opposition of siding with terrorists by targeting Nikam. “Those are not my words, I just said what was written in the book by SM Mushrif. Every information was there about the bullet by which Hemant Karkare was shot, it was not the bullet of terrorists,” Wadettiwar said in response to criticism.
