Elon Musk’s first day out – inside Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters – was recorded in his tweet as a video with the new Twitter owner walking into a rather empty lobby reverberating with his voice as he carries a kitchen sink with him. The tweet was captioned ‘Entering Twitter HQ – let that sink in!’ The now self-styled ‘Chief Twit’ – Musk’s new Twitter handle – didn’t waste much time throwing the kitchen sink at Twitter’s top management. He has already shown CEO Parag Agrawal, CFO Ned Segal and head of legal, policy and trust Vijaya Gadde the door. He tweeted ‘The bird is freed’ after completing his $44 billion acquisition on Thursday, referring to his vision of the social messaging platform no longer being ‘an echo chamber’ and polarising site (read: a playground for liberal wokes and PC trigger-happy driving a cancel culture of their narrow tastes and views).
Musk, of course, has said that he hasn’t bought Twitter to make money, but to ‘try and help humanity, whom I love’. That love is probably going to be in short supply for many of Twitter’s 7,500 employees, since The Melon has also said he will cut jobs. The new owner of Twitter seems to have brought the ways of the Texas gunslinger into the more post-hippie hipster working climes of Frisco. Out with the flip-flops. The bird stays blue, but may no longer be hushtagged.
