Mumtaz recently discussed the challenging phase in her career when she faced the label of a B-grade actor before attaining fame and success in the film industry. Commencing her acting journey at the young age of 11, the veteran actress recounted the struggles she encountered during the initial years of her career.
Acknowledging that she was categorised as a B-grade actor due to her involvement in numerous small roles and comedy projects with Mehboob sahab, Mumtaz revealed, “I just closed my eyes and did the work. I thought the rest is in God’s hands. My start in the film industry was wrong. I won’t blame the heroes for not working with me because everybody wants to climb the ladder of success.”
The turning point in Mumtaz’s career came with her role in the classic film Ram Aur Shyam, starring the legendary Dilip Kumar. Impressed by Mumtaz’s talent, Mehboob sahab showcased one of her scenes to Dilip Kumar and recommended her for the project. Despite initial concerns about their age difference, Dilip Kumar eventually agreed to collaborate with Mumtaz, recognizing her qualities such as good height, fairness, and proficiency in dancing. Mumtaz also praised Dilip Kumar’s down-to-earth nature.
Mumtaz reflected on her path, emphasising her dedication to inclusivity among fellow actors. Recalling a time when she faced rejection, she expressed the belief that, having overcome those challenges, it wouldn’t be fair to subject others to the same treatment. She affirmed her willingness to collaborate with anyone, while noting that actors lacking skill might face challenges in securing future work.
