As the East London hotel, Mondrian Shoreditch London celebrates its first birthday, its General Manager, David Lockhart, tells us the ten things to know about the hotel.
Mondrian Shoreditch turns one
This Christmas, we have collaborated with internationally renowned East-London artist Martin Richman to design a bespoke abstract Christmas tree which will be displayed in the hotel’s lobby, set to be unveiled on Monday, 21st November. The Christmas Tree will be made up of acrylic blades on nylon threads to project an array of colors to create an uplifting and extraordinary visual experience for our guests.
We love collaborating with local artists. For our first birthday in August, we partnered with Jack Irving to unveil a giant inflatable sculpture, Futura, on the hotel’s facade. For us, the birthday rocket sculpture encapsulates all that we have achieved in the last year after opening amid the pandemic and demonstrates our positive attitude for the future.
Dani Garcia’s first London outpost at BiBo
We’re proud to house Chef Dani Garcia’s first London output. BiBo is a really lively space; our hotel guests and London diners alike love it. Menu favorites have to be the Oxtail Brioche and Jamon Croquetas. My personal favorite is the broccolini salad. Chef Garcia came to visit in October, where he hosted lots of fun events, including a paella masterclass and a chef’s table.
A curated events program for staff wellbeing and socials
Each month we have a schedule of activities for staff to diversify skills and prioritize wellbeing. October’s calendar included yoga classes, talks on inclusion, recruitment workshops, boxing circuits and a fun pumpkin carving competition.
Curtain Club – a private members’ club within the hotel
October marked the first birthday of our private members Club’ The Curtain Club. It’s a space for independent thinkers to come together. We have a co-working space, a gym and a rooftop pool. The team has curated a calendar of events incorporating wellness, education and social activities.
Californian-inspired rooftop restaurant
Earlier this year, we launched our rooftop dining space, Laurel’s on the Roof. It is a real hot spot in the summer months, and we’re planning some exciting winter-themed events and pop-ups to continue offering our guests the best experiences.
A screening room
We have a screening room on the lower levels, which is perfect for small groups. A few months ago, we hosted a film club series with Game of Thrones actor Maisie Williams and her podcast, Frank Film Club, which was open to the public and very well received!
Supporting Hotel School
We’re proud to be working with Hotel School, a charity that supports vulnerable and homeless people in the hospitality industry. We work with Hotel School to provide taster days, training courses and employment opportunities, teaching the skills needed to work in the industry. Graduates who complete the training course are then carefully matched into partnership businesses with a dedicated mentor. Post-pandemic, this cause has become even more important to us.
Interiors by Goddard LittleFair
Goddard Littlefair is the mastermind company behind our interiors. They brought our vision to life, creating an upbeat and individual spirit that embodies Mondrian as a brand. GL won an award earlier this year for Mondrian Shoreditch’s design which was a great achievement for them and us!
Wellness at Mondrian Shoreditch
We have partnered with award-winning brands to offer a range of wellness treatments to in-house guests and the public. From deluxe facials to seaweed therapy and CBD oil-infused massages, there is something for everyone to indulge in a bit of self-care.
Christina’s cocktail bar
Christina’s is a real neighborhood hangout for East London locals. It’s an all-day spot serving great coffee before transforming into a cocktail bar. We have focused on celebrating independent suppliers with an aligned social impact goal. Not to mention, our Head Bartender, Kevin, makes a mean negroni.
