Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari Formula One car, which won the 2001 Monaco and Hungarian Grand Prix races, has been sold for a record $18.17 million, according to RM Sotheby’s.
Auctioned before the Monaco Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday, the F2001 car used by the legendary German driver to secure the world title that year has become the most expensive F1 vehicle driven by Schumacher to be sold at auction.
The $18.17 million price surpasses the $13.2 million paid for Schumacher’s 2003 Ferrari F2003 earlier.
It is also the fourth-most expensive F1 car ever sold, with the world record held at $52.52 million for a Mercedes W196 streamliner driven by Formula One legends Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss in the 1950s.
Schumacher, now 56, drove the F2001 Ferrari to his fifth and final victory at the Monaco Grand Prix, followed by a win at the Hungarian Grand Prix, securing his fourth F1 world title with the latter win.
