Mexico’s Popocatépetl volcano spews plume of ash and gas

Authorities have declared a yellow alert after Mexico’s Popocatépetl volcano spewed a 3km (1.86 mile) column of ash and gas on Tuesday evening.

It has been erupting two to three times daily for almost a week.

Located just 70km (43.5 miles) from Mexico City, Popocatépetl is one of the country’s most dangerous and most active volcanoes.

Residents in the south of Puebla have been warned to watch out for ash fall and to not approach the volcano.

In May 2023, ash emissions by Popocatépetl led to local authorities closing schools in 11 surrounding towns and temporarily shutting down Mexico City and Puebla airports.
