Lawrence Okolie to make sure Eddie Hearn delivers on his promise of a new £40,0000 Rolex

‘This is not a joke… this is a matter of honour’: Lawrence Okolie to make sure Eddie Hearn delivers on his promise of a new £40,0000 Rolex for winning his first world title

Britain’s new cruiserweight king Lawrence Okolie will not let promoter Eddie Hearn squirm out of a promise he made to reward his first world title with a new £40,000 Rolex.

Okolie became only this country’s seventh world champion at 14st 4lbs with a punch-perfect destruction of Krzysztof Glowacki on Saturday night.

During the WBO title fight the 28-year-old was unable to stop thinking about Hearn’s vow to buy him a gold Sky Dweller watch if he won.

And on Monday Okolie smiled: ‘I’ve done my research… this is not a joke to me. This is a matter of honour.

‘This is a matter for all the Olympians that are going to turn professional, all of the young pros coming up, you want to be able to trust your promoter.

‘You want to know that he says something and it ends up happening. The same way I said I’m going to train my hardest and do everything I can to become a world champion, I held up my end of the bargain, I did that.

‘So now it’s up to Eddie to do the same. But we spoke yesterday he said he’s going to 100 per cent sort it. He wasn’t happy about it but he’s going to do it anyway.’

The new piece of jewellery around Okolie’s waist, meanwhile, will unlock more big fights and even potential immortality.

The Hackney fighter, who is the first of Britain’s Rio 2016 crop to win a world title, wants to become this country’s greatest ever cruiserweight.

To emulate David Haye, Okolie hopes to unify the division before moving up and winning a heavyweight title. In between, he wants to pick up a belt in the new ‘bridgerweight’ division too.

Okolie plans to resume running on Tuesday and his next fight could be on the undercard of Tyson Fury’s megafight with Anthony Joshua, whose 258 Management have guided Okolie’s professional career.

‘People have been calling me “champ” – I thought I might be like a caterpillar who suddenly turns into a butterfly but I feel just the same really, I just have a new belt and status,’ he said.

‘I don’t have big parties when I win, I don’t drink alcohol but I also don’t like planning an after-party before I have actually won. My mum was screaming and crying on the phone but… I didn’t feel like running around and shouting.’

Instead Okolie only wanted to toast victory with a bubble bath.

‘It was just an Epsom salts and essential oils,’ the 6ft 5ins fighter revealed.

‘I don’t have a custom-made bath yet, I just have to do the lower half of my body first, then the upper.’

Okolie won the world title in only his 16th professional fight but he is now chasing immediate unification fights with the likes of IBF champion, Mairis Briedis.

‘I want to be like Thanos – going and collecting all the little gems until I’m king of the world,’ he said.

Before Saturday’s victory at Wembley, Okolie revealed how lockdown had allowed him to invest in marginal gains.

He used a wristwatch to monitor his calories and listened to sounds of the rainforest to improve his sleep.

Now the world champion wants to become even stricter with his diet – and stop being distracted by women.

‘(It’s) the odd late night here. I still get a good night’s sleep. But hey, maybe not – little bits and bobs,’ he said.
