Today is International Mothers-in-Law Day. Or, at any rate, it should be, considering yesterday was International Men’s Day, and, therefore, at least one half of the human population is reasonably prepared. (Sorry, ladies.) ‘Why?!’ we can hear daughters-in-law, sons-in-law and general outlaws among you cry out from in front of the page. It’s legit to ask why on Earth – for all their passive-aggression, strategic judgmental outlook, and general tendency to play government to their wards and wards-in-law – should there be a dedicated day for the sassy saas? For starters, it’s the right thing to do. For another, it’ll take the rug from under most mums-in-law’s feet to be given special maska on a day without them knowing ‘what is the because’.
Even as Software as a Service is Saas, it would be a disservice to consider the mother of your partner, a.k.a. more challenging half of your better half, as anything close to software. Even the genuinely benign, doting MIL tends to be almost as much of a busybody as saas-sasur sarkars at Centre or states are with their citizens. So, dedicate one day of the year to ‘her majesty’, and reduce some of the tension that comes with the job of bahu or jamai. The US ‘celebrates’ National Mother-in-Law Day on the fourth Sunday of every October. Let’s just say that it’s a few days before Halloween is telling.
