Kapil Sibal’s Dramatic Shift: From Opposing Ram Mandir to Heartfelt Belief

Former UPA Law Minister and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal has voiced his opinions about the grand Pran Pratishtha ceremony of Ram Lalla at the Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya, describing it as a “show-off.” On Monday, December 25th, Sibal hinted that he would decline any invitation to attend the consecration of the Ram Mandir, questioning the sincerity behind the extravagant event.

In a statement, the Congress leader emphasized that, for him, Bhagwan Ram resides in the heart, and the extravagant spectacle of Pran Pratishtha is merely a display. Sibal’s criticism extends to the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing them of not embodying the virtues of Bhagwan Ram despite their efforts in building the Ram Mandir.

According to Sibal, the BJP’s talk about Bhagwan Ram does not align with their behaviour and character, which he believes are nowhere close to the traits associated with the revered deity. He pointed out that Lord Ram is traditionally associated with qualities such as truthfulness, tolerance, sacrifice, and respect for others. However, Sibal contends that the BJP’s actions stand in stark contrast to these virtues, and he perceives the entire issue surrounding the Ram Mandir as more of a show than a genuine reflection of Lord Ram’s values.

“The whole issue is a show-off. They (BJP) talk about Ram, but their behaviour, their character are nowhere close to Bhagwan Ram’s. Truthfulness, tolerance, sacrifice, and respect for others are some of the traits of Bhagwan Ram, but they do exactly the opposite and say we are glorifying Ram,” remarked Sibal. In expressing his views, Sibal raises questions about the authenticity of the BJP’s commitment to the values associated with Bhagwan Ram and suggests that the construction of the Ram Mandir is, in his opinion, more of a political spectacle than a sincere homage to the revered deity.

Former UPA Law Minister and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal’s recent statement, “Ram has taken me here, then I must be doing something right,” adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing debate surrounding the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. Interestingly, this sentiment aligns with a similar rationale previously expressed by senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, who opposed the physical construction of a Ram Mandir at the Babri site, advocating instead for having the temple in one’s heart.

However, a notable contradiction emerges in Sibal’s case, as he was actively leading legal efforts in courts to oppose the rights of Ram Lalla and the reclamation of the birthplace of Bhagwan Ram. While suggesting a personal connection to Bhagwan Ram, his legal actions appear at odds with the sentiment of having the Ram Mandir in one’s heart.

This dual perspective raises questions about the consistency of Sibal’s position on the Ram Mandir issue. In September 2007, when the Congress-led UPA1 government was in charge, they made a statement in court questioning the historical evidence for Bhagwan Ram’s existence. The government said there’s no solid proof to confirm the historical reality of Lord Ram based on texts like Valmiki Ramayana and Ramcharitmanas, as these are seen more as ancient stories than factual historical records.

This statement was made in response to concerns about the Setusamudram project potentially harming the Ram Setu.  Kapil Sibal, a former UPA Minister and lawyer at the Supreme Court. Sibal represented the Sunni Waqf Board in the Ram Janmabhoomi case, opposing the construction of a large Ram Mandir in the disputed Ayodhya location. His legal tactics included delaying the court decision and suggesting that it be postponed until after the 2019 elections.

As conversations about the Ram Mandir continue, the events of 2007 and the legal battles that followed are essential to understanding the different perspectives and challenges tied to this long-standing matter.
