Nag Ashwin’s ambitious film Kalki 2898 AD is out in theatres. The sci-fi film that draws from mythology features Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Kamal Haasan and more as key characters. After setting up multiple arcs in the post-apocalyptic world, the film ends on a cliffhanger. Turns out we’re getting a lot more than over 3 hours of movie. The fate of several major players remains undecided. So it only makes sense for the story to continue in Kalki Part 2.

Here’s everything that went down during the ending of Kalki 2898 and what it means for the franchise’s future.

What happened to Sumati?

Much of the action of Kalki 2898 AD revolves around a to-be mother whom the rebels of Shambala believe will birth the reincarnation of God. This is Deepika Padukone’s heavily pregnant Sum-80 or Sumati. Amitabh Bachchan’s immortal Ashwatthama receives signs of her arrival and takes it upon himself to protect her. Meanwhile, Prabhas’ Bhairava wants to capture her for a bounty to reach his goal of earning enough units to enter the Complex. Ashwatthama manages to take Sumati to Shambala but Bhairava gets there too. Their clash is an extended sequence of the immortal being wiping the floor with the bounty hunter. During their tussle, the Complex forces led by Commander Manas arrive upon the scene.

Nearing the end, a major revelation unfolds as Bhairava is revealed to be the reincarnation of Karn. He is able to wield a powerful ancient weapon which he once used in battle against Arjun, alongside his friend Ashwatthama. In a trance-like state, Bhairava uses his newfound abilities to fight off the Manas’ men while Ashwatthama is tied down. Once out of the trance, he goes back to his original intent of escaping Shambala with Sumati seemingly continuing his journey towards the Complex. Ashwatthama is unable to fulfil his duty of protecting Sumati. However, it doesn’t look like that’s the last we’ll see of him.

What happens to the Supreme Yaskin?

Kalki 2898 AD ending: What happens to the Supreme Yaskin?

Kamal Haasan’s terrifying Supreme Yaskin has his people commission Project K – an experiment where several women segregated as fertile and infertile are injected with a seed to ultimately extract a serum that’ll help increase Yaskin’s life span. When we first meet the character, he’s in a deformed state levitating above a pool of water. Towards the end, when he’s injected with a small amount of the serum that was extracted from Sumati before she escaped, his body begins to change. His muscles are restored and instead of a weak old man, he gains a youthful appearance. He then declares that since none of his people have succeeded, he’s going after Sumari himself. Yaskin picks up an ancient weapon called Gandiva that was discovered earlier in the film. Nobody was able to touch it all this while. This moment is important because it hints that he turns into a powerful God. Vishnu perhaps?

What will happen in the Kalki 2898 AD sequel?

Kalki 2898 AD ending: What will happen in the Kalki 2898 AD sequel?

The film sets up an epic clash between Bhairava who has captured Sumati, the Supreme Yaskin in his new physical form and Ashwatthama who has sworn to protect Sumati. It is important to remember that Bhairava doesn’t seem to have any awareness of his past life as Karan. While we see him in full battle gear going head-to-head with Arjun, he goes back to acting in his own selfish interests when he flies off with no care about the larger concerns of Kaashi. It’ll be interesting to see what he does with all his untapped powers. One thing is certain – there’s a war coming and the stakes are higher than ever.

The last frame of the film reads, “The Kalki Cinematic Universe continues…”

Kalki 2898 AD which also features Disha Patani, Saswata Chatterjee and more is currently in theatres.
