Jaya Bachchan admonishes minister for his “ripped jeans” comment

Respected actor and Samajwadi party MP, Jaya Bachchan has lashed out at Uttarakhand Chief Minister, Tirath Singh Rawat’s statement about women wearing ripped jeans, criticising them about their values and questioning their abilities to be good parents. This statement did not sit well with Bachchan who told ANI that: “Those in higher posts must think and make public statements. You say such things in today’s times, you will decide who’s cultured and who’s not based on clothes? It’s a bad mindset and encourages crimes against women.”

Rawat had also described the attire of a woman who sat next to him on a flight. He said that the woman was wearing ripped jeans, boots and bangles and had two children travelling with her. “She runs an NGO, goes out in the society and has two children, but she wears jeans ripped at the knees. What values will she impart?” the minister had asked. He had further added that women consider themselves to be big shots while wearing ripped jeans and that if they don’t find ripped jeans in the market, they use a pair of scissors to cut the jeans they have.

Bachchan’s granddaughter, Nayva Naveli Nanda had also taken to social media to voice her disgust at the statement. “Change your mentality before changing our clothes 🙂 because the only thing shocking here is the message comments like this send to society,” she had written.
