India too is on the verge of an earthquake

Turkey and Syria recently faced the havoc of earthquake which resulted into mass devastation with death toll rising over 33,000. Looking to the role of a helping hand India has started ‘Mission Dost’. India has set up a field hospital. The army and NDRF has taken charge to help the people post disaster. But, it is not only Turkey or Syria that needs the help, India too is on the verge of an earthquake of similar intensity.

Earthquake In India

For years, a senior scientist of the Department of Earth Science of IIT Kanpur, Professor Javed Malik has studied the reasons and shifts in historic earthquakes in India. According to reports Professor Malik has claimed that some areas in India may experience earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 7.5. It is worth noting that the earthquake in Syria and Turkey was of 7.8 magnitude.

The earthquake may occur anytime in 1 or 2 year or a decade. Telling about the epicenter of the earthquake he said, “There is a possibility that the epicenter of the earthquake will be the Himalayan massif or the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. That’s why it is necessary to be careful. In view of such a strong earthquake, vigilance should be kept at every level.”

Prof. Javed classifies zones

The most perilous regions are classified as Zone 5, which encompasses the Kutch, Andaman and Nicobar, and Himalayan areas. Zone 4 encompasses the Terai regions, including Bahraich, Lakhimpur, Pilibhit, Ghaziabad, Roorkee, and Nainital. Zone 3 encompasses cities such as Kanpur, Lucknow, Prayagraj, Varanasi, and Sonbhadra.

It is interesting to know that couple of days before the Turkey and Syrian earthquakes, Dutch geologist and earthquake researcher, Frank Hoogerbeats predicted the earthquake with all its details including the magnitude and the countries that will be affected by it.

While helping the affected countries is undoubtedly a move that should be certainly applauded. And our experience with the pandemic also proves that India can deal with the emergency situations. But, the reports give a chance to India to prepare itself for future contingencies. As it is well said that “Prevention is better than cure.”
