A giant iceberg of the size of Delhi has set alarm bells ringing among the scientific community across the globe. Scientists fell that this giant ice island can pose danger for shipping, fishing and wildlife.

The large chunk of ice, shaped like a giant ironing board, is one of three pieces from the A76 iceberg which broke away from Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf in May 2021.

As per reports, the iceberg (1,550 square kilometer) is now being carried by currents and winds towards the Falklands and South Georgia.

Scientists say the massive iceberg may affect the wildlife across the seabed floor and disrupt the ocean currents if it grounds on the shallow seabed in the region on its way towards South Georgia.

There are also concerns for fishing vessels as the iceberg begins to break down into smaller chunks. The break-up of the iceberg could result in smaller icebergs impacting shipping vessel movements.

Expert also feel that the iceberg may roll over and lose their snow layers, particularly when dropping into the sea from larger masses, making them less visible to ships.

Large icebergs pose great challenge for large ship vessels. World’s biggest shipping tragedy of Titanic happened as a North Atlantic iceberg struck the giant ship on its sail to New York. Large scale of melting dumps of freshwater may also decrease the salinity levels and makes the waters “unsuitable” for many phytoplankton – which could effect other parts of the food chain including fish, birds and whales in the ocean.
