Government tried talking with protesting farmers many times, but the farmers are not…

The misinformed and highly motivated protests of certain farmer unions from Punjab and Haryana are currently resulting in a near-complete encirclement of Delhi and the National Capital Region. It must be remembered that the protesting farmers are being called upon by the central government repeatedly to indulge in talks and bring about a resolution to the ongoing tussle. However, the farmer unions, which are playing a pivotal role in spreading misinformation and absolute lies regarding the three revolutionary farm laws seem to be more inclined to rather agitate on the roads and rail tracks than bring about a resolution to the issue.

The most recent of talks were held on Tuesday, December 1 between the Central government and farm unions. On behalf of the Modi government, Ministers Piyush Goyal and Narendra Singh Tomar suggested that a high-level committee be constituted with members from the farming community, central government and agricultural experts to further deliberate on the issue. This offer was declined by the farmers, rendering Tuesday’s meeting inconclusive. Now, the farmers have been told to prepare a list of specific issues which they find concerning in the three laws, which will be taken up for discussion on Thursday, December 3 once again.

It must be mentioned that the farmers have been throwing quite a number of tantrums at the government; denying to indulge in talks at the very onset of the protests, blocking rail line in Punjab and also allowing Khalistani elements to infiltrate the protests. Despite such stunts, the Modi government is respectfully still engaging in dialogue with the farmers. It is now incumbent upon them to make the most out of the window of opportunity being provided to them, and end their misinformed protests on respectable terms with the government.

In October itself, various farm unions declined the Centre’s offer to talk on the issue of the three farm laws, citing the conduct of such meetings by mere government officers. Then, the farm unions had stated that talks will be held only with the highest elected officials of the government. Thereafter, upon the farmers nearing Delhi, Union Home Minister had himself urged the protestors to shift to Delhi’s Burari Ground and conduct their protest there. He had said that the government would organise a meeting between the two sides at the earliest if the protestors shifted to Burari ground. This request too was declined by the alleged farmers.

It thus becomes clear how the farmers remain adamant on their frivolous demands despite several olive branches being extended by the Modi government to find a resolution at the earliest on the issue.
