Exclusive: Kate Hudson and Kathryn Hahn on reuniting in Glass Onion: A…

Who doesn’t love a good reunion? It has been 19 years since the classic rom-com How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days made us collectively fall in love with Kate Hudson and Kathryn Hahn. And now, the stars are back sharing screen space in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

Crafting a whodunnit is no easy feat and to do it twice is nothing short of a triumph. That’s precisely why Glass Onion’s mere existence feels like a victory lap. Directed by Rian Johnson, the film brings back Daniel Craig’s delightful detective Benoit Blanc in a Knives Out sequel that’s sharper, snazzier and sexier. Set on a flamboyant island estate, the film is a new puzzle with plenty of quirky suspects. The stacked ensemble cast includes Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Dave Bautista, Jessica Henwick and others. While Kate plays Birdie Jay, a supermodel-turned-fashionista, Kathryn plays Claire Debella, a politician.

In an exclusive interview with Filmfare, ahead of the film’s release, Kate Hudson and Kathryn Hahn opened up about what went down behind the scenes.

Glass Onion is also a How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days reunion. What was the experience of working together again like?

Kate: The best! It was so fun and exciting. It was so great seeing Kathryn. We hadn’t seen each other for a very long time actually so when I first got there, I was like point me in the direction of Kathryn Hahn, please. And we shared the best hugs and that was it. Then our men got along while we were filming together. We would be working on set and we’d hear that Ethan and Danny were on a trip with the kids to see the ruins or something. And I felt like it was a new chapter of our friendship. I love this.

The film is filled with so many visual jokes and set pieces. How much did that help in elevating your performances?
Kathryn: I mean, this is a two-part answer – (a) I didn’t have to worry about that because we had Rian (Johnson) and his amazing editor Bob (Ducsay). This was such an ensemble where you don’t even have to worry about it because this was such a generous group and such a generous script and such a generous director so it never mattered who had the spotlight or whose time it was to shine. You’re there at the service of everyone else always so it always felt like you were there for the script and for your scene partner so it never felt like “whose turn was it?”. And (b) I’d like to say that Jenny Eagan, our costume designer, did offer a lot of help in that department for us. So whenever there was a chance to shine visually, she was there for us. Like every time you turn to Birdie Jay and her fabulous clothes.

Kate: Jenny did a lot of the work because of all these outfits. If you saw them in real life you’d think how can you not look at an insane person who has clearly travelled across the world in an outfit that nobody would ever travel in? But, I’m gonna ditto Kathryn and say that it was the same for me. This film is so well-written that one person isn’t the same without the other. I was just talking about Peg (Jessica Henwick) and Birdie’s relationship – she plays my assistant. Our relationship was so symbiotic. I was like a moth to her flame a little bit. I needed her to help me play off of something.

Knives Out Glass Onion

Since Daniel Craig was in the original film, did he have any cues to share with you behind the scenes?

Kathryn: I found it very remarkable how Daniel was just there as an ensemble member. He came in with such a spirit of generosity and as if it were the first time. He did not have any airs and didn’t feel like a “star on a movie set” at all. He was there to kind of be a part of a brand-new episode. And he just happened to have an accent that he had been working on hahaha. So he brought a freshness. He wasn’t saying “Well, when I first did this…” There was none of that energy.

Filming for this project must have been quite the experience, what’s your most memorable takeaway from the sets of Glass Onion?

Kathryn: Well, just working with this group of people. Rekindling this friendship and being on set with this cast. We’ve had a very long press tour that we’ve been on for a while and just to be still wanting to be with each other is a very precious thing and we’re very proud of it.
Kate: Yeah, I would just mirror that and say that it was all about the people you’re working with. I’ll add that we get to work with a lot of great talent but every once in a while you work with someone who is extraordinary and I would put Rian in that category. It’s really hard to make a movie that’s this good and this nuanced and layered and beautiful and hilarious – it was all in there. So to get to work with someone like Rian is definitely something I’m very grateful for.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is set to stream on OTT on December 23, 2022.
