Sushmita Sen, who has portrayed transgender activist Shreegauri Sawant for Taali, has fans gushing all over her. Sushmita’s efforts are clearly visible in the trailer, from getting the look to tuning the voice to match the character. The series is set to premiere on Independence Day and will tell the story of Ganesh and the trials she faced as she transformed into Gauri, as well as the never-ending struggles that followed.
In an exclusive chat with Filmfare Sushmita Sen opened up about the mental strain she went through while shooting for such an intense topic. She said “ It was extremely emotionally draining to perform in that headspace. When you are training in a workshop, you don’t have that environment, you’re not in costume, you don’t have people, you’re with co-actors, assistants, and teachers, It’s not the same. But when you get into that moment and perform with everyone there in real-time, it is cathartic. Because where you believed your emotions would reach a 5, it peaked at an 11 and you didn’t see it coming. Because you are so in the moment. I had many moments like that in Taali when I would just break down.”
Upon being asked how she would snap out of it the Aarya actress said, “I do spend time alone but I also don’t like to dwell on it too much because this is a way of getting sucked into something and then get stuck there. So I usually calm down, feel what I am feeling and then get back into the world, to the people, to the set. I don’t like to think about it for too long. I don’t like to stay away from the set for too long. There were some moments. And it wasn’t the emotion of the scene, it was the tragedy of the situation.”
Taali was created by Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartk D Nishandar and directed by Ravi Jadhav. It is scheduled to be released on August 15.
