England 2-1 Colombia: Alessia Russo’s goal seals Lionesses comeback victory as Sarina Wiegman’s side advance to the Women’s Word Cup semi-finals and set up clash with Australia

  • Colombia opened the scoring as Leicy Santos lobbed England’s Mary Earps
  • Lauren Hemp pulled the Lionesses level with a stroke of luck before half-time
  • Alessia Russo put England ahead with a brilliant finish in the second-half

England came from behind to beat Colombia 2-1 in Sydney and advance to the Women’s World Cup semi-finals where they will face hosts Australia next.

Colombia opened the scoring with a bizarre goal that saw Mary Earps lobbed by Leicy Santos as her effort scooped over the England and Man United goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

England replied with an almost immediate equaliser fashioned by Colombia goalkeeper Catalina Perez who fumbled the ball after diving on it and gave Lauren Hemp the chance to stab in a hugely fortunate equaliser on the stroke of half-time.

Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses hadn’t been at their best but came out flying in the second-half and took the lead for the first time in the match in the 63rd minute as Alessia Russo added a second.

Her goal proved to be the difference despite a late flurry of efforts from Colombia as England held on to seal a victory that keeps their World Cup dream alive.
