EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Drugs warning to Queen’s Club rowdies

Drugs warning to Queen’s rowdies as EDEN CONFIDENTIAL sheds light on Britain’s snootiest sports centre

It’s known as Britain’s snootiest sports centre, where various royals and Pippa Middleton play tennis on the grass courts, but the Queen’s Club is, apparently, a hotbed of hooliganism and drug-taking.

Members of the West London club, which hosts the Cinch Championships this week where Sir Andy Murray is warming up for Wimbledon, have received an extraordinary letter, warning them not to abuse stewards or take illegal drugs.

‘Unfortunately in recent years, we have experienced some isolated incidents of poor member behaviour,’ writes Ross Niland, Queen’s chief executive.

‘I would remind everyone that the club will not tolerate any abusive, aggressive or threatening behaviour towards any steward, security guard, employee or other member of staff.’

Niland adds: ‘Anyone who refuses to cooperate with reasonable demands or behaves in an abusive or threatening manner will be asked to leave the site.

‘We also offer a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to the misuse of drugs.’

One member is not surprised that the warning was necessary. ‘Last couple of years has been out of hand in the pavilion, to be honest,’ he tells me.

‘Some druggy Hooray Henrys sledging players, calling out during rallies, and the odd idiot falling over or knocking into someone, spilling drinks and causing fights.’

Membership of Queen’s costs more than £2,000 per year and is so exclusive that the waiting list is said to have been closed because it became too long.
