Echo, the next series to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe arrives in a matter of days. Starring Alaqua Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, K. Devery Jacobs and more, the show follows Maya Lopez as she goes to Oklahoma. The show will see the deaf and mute superhero connect with her Choctaw Nation roots.
Director Sydney Freeland has now opened up about highlighting Echo aka Maya Lopez’s Native American identity. She says, “She has to flee to the last place that people would look for her, which is where she grew up in Oklahoma’s Choctaw Nation.”
Freeland adds, “One of the big differences in the character that jumped out at me was that she’s not a generic Native American character but someone with specificity in her heritage who must embrace the language and traditions of her culture.”
To note, Maya was introduced in the MCU series Hawkeye led by Hailee Steinfeld and Jeremy Renner. The upcoming spin-off series selves into her backstory as she goes up against Wilson Fisk and his criminal empire.
Echo which also sees D’Onofrio reprise his role as Kingpin, will release on January 10, 2024.
