PANAJI: More than eight hours after a speeding Mercedes-Benz SUV driven by a “drunk” driver killed three people and left several injured at Banastarim, 17km from Panaji, on Sunday night, Goa police on Monday arrested Shripad alias Paresh Sinai Sawardekar, 48, at 4am on Monday. He was later remanded in two days of police custody and moved a bail application before the judicial magistrate first class, Ponda.
Sawardekar, a real estate developer and resident of Miramar, was booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder (Section 304 IPC) and rash and negligent driving (Section 279 IPC), among others. The vehicle is registered in the name of Paresh’s wife Meghana Sawardekar, who was also in the car, along with their three children. Police said Meghana was also under the influence of alcohol.
Police said after the speeding car crashed into two bikes, the car’s direction changed and then rammed into three other cars coming in the opposite direction. Several people sustained injuries in this second crash. TNN
