Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said dividing the society for political interest, or in the name of caste, region, and language is nothing less than treason. He, however, said he believes that those from underprivileged sections should get their rights and this had been possible “for the first time in independent India” under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

In an exclusive interview with Network18 Group Editor-in-Chief Rahul Joshi at the Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, Adityanath also expressed his views on a caste census proposed by opposition leaders like senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav.

Asked if he was in favour of a caste census, he said it is India’s good fortune that in the last decade the rights of those from the poor, deprived, and backward sections have been safeguarded under Modi’s leadership.

“I believe that the poor, deprived, Dalits, backward castes should get their rights and this is the responsibility of a sensitive government. And, it is the good fortune of the country that in the last decade, for the first time in independent India, every such person has experienced this under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi,” he said.

The Uttar Pradesh chief minister, however, warned the “followers of Sanatan Dharma” to be cautious of “those trying to divide people”. “Dividing the society for your political interest, or in the name of caste, region, or language is nothing less than treason,” he said.

Asked about the opposition’s claims of politicisation of a religious event, he added: “If you try to come to power by dividing society, the country will not forgive you. We do not want to divide, we have to make India strong. This is the strength of Sanatan, the strength of the country.”

He further said welfare schemes under the central government embodied the prime minister’s vision of ‘sabka saath, sabka vikas’. This is reflected in homes for the poor under the Awas Yojana, construction of toilets, 10 crore LPG connections, free electricity to four crore beneficiaries, free ration to 80 crore people in the last five years, and benefits to 12 crore farmers under the Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme, he added.

“There was no discrimination in all these policies, and this has only been possible due to Modi ji’s leadership and welfare schemes with the vision of ‘sabka saath, sabka vikas’,” he said.
