Daniel Ricciardo Confirms Red Bull Return as Third Driver

The Australian made his Formula One debut for the short-lived HRT team, in 2011 before joining Red Bull feeder squad Toro Rosso the following year.

Daniel Ricciardo, who lost his McLaren seat as his career fell into the doldrums this year, has joined Red Bull as third driver for 2023, the team said on Wednesday.

“Bringing a wealth of experience and character, Daniel will assist the team with testing and Sim work, as well as commercial activity,” said the Red Bull announcement.

The Australian made his Formula One debut for the short-lived HRT team, in 2011 before joining Red Bull feeder squad Toro Rosso the following year.

He moved up to Red Bull in 2014 and stayed five seasons winning seven races and finishing third in the driver standings twice.

“The smile says it all. I’m truly excited to be coming back home to Oracle Red Bull Racing,” Ricciardo said. “I already have so many fond memories of my time here.”

Last week, Mercedes team chief Toto Wolff confirmed they had held talks with Ricciardo over the third driver role but that the Australian was talking to other teams.

After leaving Red Bull, Ricciardo raced two seasons with Renault and two with McLaren, winning the Italian Grand Prix in 2021.
