Conor McGregor reveals his regret at not challenging Tyron Woodley and becoming a three-weight UFC world champion before boxing Floyd Mayweather… as he insists he is ‘multiple times’ better than when he knocked out Eddie Alvarez in 2016

Conor McGregor was in a nostalgic mood on Thursday as he celebrated his four-year anniversary at UFC 205.

That fight in New York saw UFC history created as McGregor, who already held the featherweight belt at the time, became the sport’s first-ever fighter to hold world titles in two divisions concurrently by becoming lightweight champion too.

The ‘Notorious’ achieved the feat with a second-round knockout of Eddie Alvarez at the iconic Madison Square Garden on November 12, 2016.

And reflecting on that win, the Irishman has revealed he regrets not trying to create more history by becoming a three-weight world champion by taking on Tyron Woodley before he fought boxing legend Floyd Mayweather in August 2017.

Woodley was the welterweight champion at the time and he fought at UFC 205 as the co-main event against Stephen Thompson.

That enthralling spectacle ended in a draw but watching both bouts back on TV, McGregor took to Twitter to state he missed an opportunity.

‘Currently watching Woodley Wonderboy 1 on BT Sport. I should have went for that treble real quick. Pre Floyd. Ah well, the game is still young,’ he wrote.

McGregor’s thoughts had soon reached Woodley who strongly disagreed on Twitter: ‘shoulda, woulda, wouldn’t have #AllCap’.

It wasn’t just on Twitter that McGregor was vocal as he aired some statements on Instagram too – this time warning the sport that he is ‘multiple times better’ since that win over Alvarez.

Posting two pictures from that win, the Irishman accompanied the first with ‘Happy “Champ Champ Day” everyone. November twelfth! The day we completed the game and made history.

‘First legalized UFC event in New York! First duel weight UFC world champion! Irish!’ [sic]

In the second one, he added: ‘Most Knockdowns in a UFC World Title Fight,’ McGregor wrote. ‘Clinical shooting. I have surpassed this level, multiple times over. Excited to showcase!’

It’ll be interesting to note if those improvements are real come the 32-year-old’s next fight which is set to be a rematch against Dustin Poirier.

On Wednesday, McGregor confirmed his return to the Octagon against Dustin Poirer, admitting he is excited to ‘do what I love again’.

‘Notorious’ appeared to have walked away from UFC when he announced his retirement in June, but has since teased a dramatic comeback on social media and has been in talks for a rematch against ‘The Diamond’ over the last month, with a fight date now slated for January 23.

After lightweight king Khabib Nurmagomedov hung up his gloves, McGregor has been tipped to dominate the division and reclaim the titles he lost to the Russian star, and now he has revealed he is ‘grateful’ to return – vowing to show off his ‘weaponry’ against Poirer.

‘I am very grateful to be about to return and get to do what I love again,’ he said in a statement on Instagram.

‘I look forward to the fresh test Dustin will bring since our first bout, while also showcasing my own incredibly deep cache of weaponry. Whatever tool is needed on the night will be pulled from the duffel.’
