If Sergio Perez gets replaced in 2025, Liam Lawson or Yuki Tsunoda may take his place, according to Christian Horner.
Sergio Perez may part ways with the Red Bull team ahead of the 2025 Formula One season. If that happens, Team Principal Christian Horner has already hinted at who will replace the Mexican driver in the next campaign. Perez secured four podium finishes in the first five Grand Prix of this year. His performance was quite underwhelming in the following races. He contributed only 49 points between round seven in Imola and round 24 in Abu Dhabi. It impacted Red Bulls’ position in the constructors’ standings. The team finished the season in third place with 589 points.
McLaren has secured the top spot with 666 points, while Ferrari remains second with 652 points. Max Verstappen claimed the driver’s title two rounds early, accumulating 437 points. If Sergio Perez could match his success, Red Bull would win the constructor title by over 200 points. The 37-year-old Mexican was handed a two-year contract extension earlier in June.
If Perez gets replaced in 2025, Liam Lawson or Yuki Tsunoda may take his place, according to Christian Horner. Lawson has replaced Daniel Ricciardo since the United States Grand PrixandHorner appears to be impressed by his performance.
“I think Liam, in challenging circumstances, has done a very good job. If you analyse what he’s done in the time he’s had and the race pace he’s had, I think he’s done a good job,” Horner said, as quoted by Formula1.com.
Meanwhile, Tsunoda successfully overcame his first test for Red Bull in Abu Dhabi. About him, Horner said, “I think Yuki’s done a good job, so if anything was decided with Checo, they would be the candidates we would look towards.”
Speaking about Sergio Perez’s future in the team, Horner explained, “Obviously those discussions will happen between Checo and the team. Now [we’ve got] the season out of the way, we’ll sit down with him and reflect on the season and obviously where it’s gone wrong and collectively work out what is the right and appropriate way forward.”
He’s done an awful lot for this team and we’ll sit down and reflect on this season and how we move forward. There’s no immediate rush. We have all of the permutations available to us internally, so I think the first thing is to sit down with Checo and have that conversation now that the season’s completed,” he added.
Horner wants two drivers regularly adding points to the constructor’s tally in the 2025 season. The campaign will begin with the Australian Grand Prix on March 16. In the following week, the competition will shift to Shanghai for the Chinese Grand Prix.
