Callum Hawkins’ battles with the final mile of the marathon got the better of him once again in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The Scot had finished fourth at the World Championships in London in 2017 and collapsed with heat exhaustion after 25 miles while leading at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Here, in a superb run, he went to the front with less than a mile remaining. However, he was ultimately beaten into fourth again by the Ethiopian pair of Lelisa Desisa and Mosinet Geremew and Kenyan Amos Kipruto.

Hawkins finished in 2hr 10min 57sec, just 17sec behind gold medallist Desisa.
Hawkins had prepared for the fierce desert heat by running on a treadmill in his garden shed, surrounded by heaters bought from Aldi.
‘I’m gutted,’ Hawkins said. ‘Maybe I just gave too much in the middle stages, but I couldn’t do any more.’
