BSF troops shoot smuggler at tense India-Bangladesh border | India News

A violent clash occurred between Border Security Force (BSF) and Bangladeshi smugglers on the night of August 11-12, near the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal’s Malda district. The smugglers, carrying sharp-edged weapons, were trying to smuggle contraband into Bangladesh when intercepted by BSF personnel. The jawans retaliating in self defense killed one smuggler and seized contrabands & weapons.
A jawan, using night vision equipment, noticed a group of 5-6 people carrying goods from India towards Bangladesh. As per reports, he tried to intercept them and another hidden group attacked him. The jawan fired a round in self-defense, but the smugglers continued their escape attempt. A second jawan was also attacked and fired another round, causing the smugglers to retreat under the cover of darkness.
The company commander arrived promptly and initiated a search operation, leading to the discovery of six bundles of bidi leaves and an injured smuggler named Abdullah in the nearby jungle. Abdullah, from Rishipara village in Bangladesh’s Chapainawabganj district, was taken to a government hospital in Mahesil, Murshidabad, where he later died from his injuries, as per reports.
The India-Bangladesh border has witnessed an influx of people congregating in substantial numbers, as the political turmoil in Bangladesh continues to unfold. In recent days, the Border Security Force (BSF) has successfully thwarted multiple attempts by large groups attempting to infiltrate into Indian territory.
In response to the evolving circumstances in Bangladesh, union home minister Amit Shah on August 9 declared that the Modi administration has established a dedicated committee to vigilantly observe the developments unfolding along the Indo-Bangladesh border.
This committee will operate in close collaboration with the Bangladeshi authorities, with the primary objective of ensuring the well-being and security of Indian citizens, Hindus, and other minority groups residing within the borders of the neighboring nation.
The violent demonstrations that have gripped Bangladesh over the past few weeks have claimed the lives of nearly 300 individuals. These protests also precipitated the abrupt resignation of Sheikh Hasina on August 5.
