Brittney Griner has bemoaned that her WNBA team wasn’t already flying private before the internationally convicted drug smuggler was asked questions relating to her patriotism and whether she had sex with Vladimir Putin in exchange for her freedom.
‘I’ll say this – I think we should have already had the option to use a different airline, a more private airline, a charter flight,’ Griner said in a virtual press conference Monday.
‘It’s a shame it had to get to rock bottom because I feel like waiting for something to happen, then making a change – you don’t know what that something’s going to be.’
‘Rock bottom’ for Griner was being approached by BlazeTV’s comedic provocateur Alex Stein, who asked both journalistic and juvenile questions of her while she was at Dallas Fort Worth Airport with the Phoenix Mercury earlier this month.
Griner refused to respond to Stein in any respect as he asked her questions, among other things, regarding the Merchant of Death – for whom the U.S. traded in exchange for her – and her affinity for America. Those questions particularly, have not been put to Griner since her return to U.S. soil in December.

Brittney Griner was asked if she had sex with Russian president Vladimir Putin on Saturday
‘We’ve all seen what can happen in this world,’ she added. ‘When you play the wait-and-see game, you’re really playing with fire, you’re playing with people’s lives. So I’m glad they finally got it together and allow us to do this. It’s just a shame it took so damn long, honestly.’
It is unknown what the current travel plans are for the Mercury with both the team and WNBA revealing little for ‘security reasons’, per ESPN.
Stein released a full clip of his interaction with Griner June 11, in which he asked: ‘Was that a fair trade for the Merchant of Death? I know you kill it on the court, but he kills it in real life.
‘Is it true you had to have sex with Vladimir Putin to get released from Russia? Brit? What about his wife?’
Following Stein’s taunts, the Mercury were eventually escorted into a room at the airport to get away from the comedian.
Reaction from the American public has not been overwhelmingly positive after Griner’s return, particularly given her previous comments about boycotting the national anthem, a stance she has changed since her return following imprisonment in Russia. Why this is, the public does not yet know.
