Manipur’s first fiction film, Boong, directed by Lakshmipriya Devi (LP), made its debut at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 7, 2024. Featured in the prestigious Discovery section, the film brings global attention to the underrepresented cinema of Manipur. TIFF, running from September 5-15, 2024, is known for showcasing fresh talent in world cinema.
Set in Khurukhul village and Moreh on the India-Myanmar border, Boong tells the emotional story of a young boy trying to reunite his broken family. Lakshmipriya, inspired by her childhood memories of folk tales shared by her grandmother, crafted this heartfelt narrative as a tribute to Manipur’s community spirit and strength.
Co-produced by Excel Entertainment, Chalkboard Entertainment, and Suitable Pictures, Boong premiered at TIFF’s Scotiabank-9 theatre on September 7, with additional screenings on September 8 and 13. It joins a select list of Manipuri films showcased at the festival, reigniting interest in the region’s rich cinematic heritage.
