‘He talked so much s*** only to quit on his stool’: Social media slams Billy Joe Saunders for failing to make it out for round nine against Canelo Alvarez despite his suspected fractured eye socket after getting caught by a brutal uppercut
- Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez defeated Billy Joe Saunders with a brutal round 8 stoppage
- Saunders was said to have been left with a busted eye socket after the fight
- Fans quickly poured onto social media in their thousands to offer reaction
- Saunders has been slammed for talking s**** only to then ‘quit on his stool’
The boxing world didn’t take long to react after Mexican maestro Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez made light work of Billy Joe Saunders to become the unified middleweight champion of the world.
After putting on a spectacle Canelo dispatched Saunders by 8th round TKO to add the WBO belt to his collection, and prove his credentials as the best pound-for-pound puncher on the planet.
As word came that he was on his way to hospital in the aftermath of the fight, promoter Eddie Hearn said: ‘His team refused to let him fight on and it seems his eye socket is broken.’
Billy Joe Saunders quickly came in for criticism online after losing to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez
There was a crowd of 73,000 fans inside the AT&T stadium in Texas as Canelo won a new belt
Yet despite Saunders putting in his best efforts, the world of social media was left largely unimpressed by the way his team called time on the contest.
Team Saunders threw the towel in while their man was still on his stool, with fans immediately using this as a reason to snipe at the British star.
One Twitter user simply wrote: ‘Billy Joe Saunders talked so much s*** only to quit on his stool.’
Some fans were clearly left unimpressed at the manner in which Saunders had billed up the possibility of an upset, only to then fail to go the distance with the Mexican.
Other views were slightly more considered. Another fan concluded: ‘There’s been quite a bit of Billy Joe Saunders criticism on the timeline, and fair enough. But I want to draw this distinction: Despite whatever you think of him as a person, as a boxer he’s also a total baby who quit as soon as he encountered adversity.
While another added, in more ruthless fashion: ‘Canelo landed a peach of a uppercut. Timing beats speed and he made that bum Billy Joe Saunders quit on his stool.’
The theme quickly became consistent, with user @HintsMarcs musing: ‘Well well talk the talk Billy Joe Saunders but quit on his stool, not a true champion.’
Matters had not been helped with current world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury weighing in with his opinions on the showdown prior to the first bell.
The iconic Fury had told Sportsmail: ‘There will be no ducking, diving and dodging by Billy Joe this time. He will shock the world by winning and by the way he does it.
‘He will come out, hold his ground and impose that southpaw jab on Canelo time and time and time again. Bang, bang, bang.’
After Saunders failed to live up to Fury’s billing, some fans took the opportunity to message the ‘Gypsy King’ himself to call out his ill-fated call that his compatriot would do the business and take a shock win.
Once Saunders didn’t make it back out to fight in the ninth round, Canelo was awarded a victory recorded as a TKO
One fan questioned: ‘@Tyson_Fury Yo what was Saunders gonna teach Canelo in boxing? How to quit early? A boxing lesson? Where?’
It did not take long before the whole fight itself was given meme treatment online, with social media users mocking up images of the two fighters during the contest.
One fan imposed Canelo’s face onto the body of the all-powerful super villain Thanos from the marvel cinematic universe, after he claimed the one belt he needed from Saunders to become the unified ruler of all.
