The billionaires seem to love Joe Biden. With less than 100 days until the election, Joe Biden has received donations from 131 members of the upper crust, while Donald Trump has gotten donations from just 105 of his fellow tycoons, according to an analysis of Federal Election Commission filings.
Since May, Biden has added over two dozen new names to his roster of billionaire donors, while Trump has added just six. Biden’s newest supporters include political power players like George Soros. Soros gave $505,600 to Biden’s joint fundraising committee with the Democratic National Committee in May. Soros has spent over $8 million this election cycle on other causes so far.
Biden’s other new donors mostly made their money in tech. Facebook billionaires Sean Parker and Dustin Moskovitz made six-figure contributions, as did Twilio CEO Jeff Lawson, Twitter cofounder Ev Williams, and Zynga founder Mark Pincus. Nicole Systrom, who is married to Instagram cofounder Kevin Systrom, donated $250,000.
Billionaire Jeff Skoll, who was eBay’s first full-time hire, also gave $620,600 between May and June. Skoll, who was born in Canada and became an American citizen in 2007, is spending far more on this election than he ever has before. Not including his donations to the Biden committees, he gave $4.5 million in May and June to super-PACs supporting Biden and Senate Democrats.
Trump’s new contributors, meanwhile, include a couple of Republican stalwarts, Bernard and Billi Marcus, who gave a combined $721,200 in May. (Bernard Marcus’s fellow Home Depot cofounder Arthur Blank also made his first contribution to a presidential campaign in June, donating $5,600 to Biden.) Oracle CEO Safra Catz and her husband Gal Tirosh gave $250,000 to Trump’s joint fundraising committees in June. Trump also received new support from Rodger Riney, the cofounder of discount brokerage firm Scottrade and Thomas Duff, who is one of the owners of Southern Tire Mart. Each made small contributions of less than $2,800.
Here’s a closer look at all the new donors to Biden and Trump.
