Actors Who Safeguarded ‘Personality Rights’
Apart from Jackie Shroff, Bollywood actors like Anil Kapoor, and veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan opted for a legal way to protect their, ‘personality rights’. In September 2023, the Delhi High Court passed an interim order to protect the personality rights of Anil Kapoor. The Delhi HC further restrained multiple entities from misusing his image, voice, name, and other particular elements that define the persona of the actor.
The veteran Bollywood actor sought to restrict the unauthorised use of his name, the acronym associated with him, his voice, image, as well as the characters he has portrayed, such as Lakhan, Mr. India, Majnu Bhai, and Nayak. Additionally, the actor sought to prevent the unauthorised use of popular phrases like “jhakas.” Before this, another renowned Bollywood actor, Amitabh Bachchan, had also approached the High Court to restrict the use of his voice for promotional purposes without his consent.
