Jannik Sinner* 3-6, 2-5 (40-15) Daniil Medvedev

This is better. You can see Sinner relaxing after some easy points.

A loud cry of ‘VAMOS JANNIK’ from the crowd.

They are right there with him as he looks to put the pressure right back on Medvedev’s serve.

Rod Laver Arena is a perfect stage

Picture perfect on Rod Laver Arena.

A bucket list destination for me and many other tennis fans, no doubt.

Breaking: JANNIK SINNER BREAKS BACK

He’s still down a break in this second set but he’s not going down without a fight.

Jannik Sinner 3-6, 1-5 (40-15) *Daniil Medvedev

The first two points he has dropped in this set leave Medvedev with work to do to serve out this set.

Now has to save break points of his own.

Breaking: DANIIL MEDVEDEV BREAKS AGAIN

This is a one-sided affair so far. And it’s hard to be too critical of Sinner.

Daniil Medvedev has been out-of-this-world good.

Jannik Sinner* 3-6, 1-4 (15-40) Daniil Medvedev

Ha – the Russian definitely heard all the noise.

This has been spectacular to this poinnt.

Darren Cahill’s advice to Jannik Sinner

Stay aggressive mate. Try and take the net away from him

Some words of encouragement from the Italian’s coach. It seems a thankless task right now though…

Jannik Sinner* 3-6, 1-4 Daniil Medvedev

This is ridiculous. It’s so, so good.

This is a joke as he seals it with a backhand volley. He’s 12/12 on points behind his own serve in this set.

Breaking: DANIIL MEDVEDEV BREAKS

Sinner had only dropped serve twice en route to the final.

He’s lost it twice already in this match.

Jannik Sinner* 3-6, 1-2 (40-A) Daniil Medvedev

Every Sinner service game has been a war, whereas Medvedev is ofen holding to love.

That is not a good recipe for the young Italian. It can’t continue being this hard.

Facing another break point now.

Jannik Sinner* 3-6, 1-2 (30-15) Daniil Medvedev

An audible gasp from the crowd just now as they saw a replay of how close Daniil Medvedev’s return was to landing in.

Jannik Sinner* 3-6, 1-2 Daniil Medvedev

Medvedev is holding to love quicker than I can get blog entries in.

This isn’t an accident. He’s spent 20 hours on court in this run to the final and he’s putting his foot on the throttle here.

Firmly in control is the Russian. Sinner isn’t getting a sniff trying to break.

Jannik Sinner* 3-6, 0-1 (A-40) Daniil Medvedev

Into our fifth deuce and it’s a great serve to set up a volleyed winner two shots later.

The crowd leaning more towards Sinner now. They don’t want this one over in a hurry.

Nick Kyrgios loves it!

ABSURD. That’s aa ridiculously hard shot to execute. Oh man, that’s sexy!

Ok so Nick Kyrgios just got very giddy about a Medvedev backhand winner down the line.

Jannik Sinner* 3-6, 0-1 (40-40) Daniil Medvedev

Overhand slam MISSED. Huge opportunity wasted for Medvedev.

Jannik Sinner* 3-6, 0-1 (40-A) Daniil Medvedev

Medvedev’s attitude and application has been *so* impressive so far.

Just a baseliner? Think again.

Another break point opportunity served up now… and he’ll get to attack a second serve.

Jannik Sinner* 3-6, 0-1 (A-40) Daniil Medvedev

Dealt with that really well. Opted for a driven volley, rather than an overhand smash and it’s a clinched fist of celebration towards his box after that point.

He then follows it up with a perfectly executed forehand winner to bamboozle and wrongfoot the Russian. A wry smile from Medvedev after that one.

Jannik Sinner* 3-6, 0-1 (30-40) Daniil Medvedev

Arms outstretched towards his box. Sinner looks flummoxed.

This is a massive moment. Break point opportunity.

Jannik Sinner* 3-6, 0-1 (30-30) Daniil Medvedev

Jannik Sinner, dare I say, looks a bit jaded already here.

Medvedev seems energised at every Sinner mistake and the ‘Slim Reaper’ as he’s known in the locker room is the Italian’s worst nightmare right now.

Jannik Sinner 3-6, 0-1 *Daniil Medvedev

No messing about. Sinner is in the trenches here.

Breaking: DANIIL MEDVEDEV WINS SET ONE

This has been night and day from his semi-final against Alexander Zverev, where he was two sets down.

The first set point is saved by Sinner, forcing a netted return on the backhand side after a 19-shot rally.

The second he gets away with, miscuing a drop shot before Medvedev’s cross-court return allowed for a passing shot.

But the third was a step too far for the young Italian, with Medvedev forcing an error from his rival.

Jannik Sinner* 3-5 (15-30) Daniil Medvedev

This is an absolute clinic from Medvedev.

He’s toying with Sinner and having only been out on court for around 30 minutes, the Russian is trying to break for the first set here.

Jannik Sinner* 3-5 Daniil Medvedev

I’m so impressed with Medvedev’s composure so far.

Even hen he does make an unforced error, he completely forgets it almost instantly.

Motoring towards the first set with 86% first serves in. It’s hard to compete with that, truth be told.

Marathan Man Meddy in a rush

Having spent six hours more on court than his opponent, it might not be a bad idea for Daniil Medvedev to try and wrap sets up quickly.

Jannik Sinner* 2-4 (30-15) Daniil Medvedev

First point of the game it’s an unforced error on a cross-court forehand – and that sums up how this match has gone so far.

A drop shot thereafter sits up for Medvedev, only for him to overcook his lashed forehand.

Then an ace brings up 30-15. Big cheer from the crowd on that one.

Jannik Sinner 2-3 (15-40) *Daniil Medvedev

‘Crazy’ and ‘Clutch’ are the words coming out of Nick Kyrgios’ mouth right now when it comes to some of these wild Medvedev winners.

His ground strokes are out of this world good.

Perfect execution of his points so far. Sinner looks shy of any answers.

Jannik Sinner 2-3 *Daniil Medvedev

Feels like an important steadier for Sinner here.

Lots of shouts of encouragement from his box and I don’t blame them.

A few more first serves land in and he can win easier points behind that serve.

It’s the second serve which looks set to be the Achilles heel.

Jannik Sinner* 1-3 Daniil Medvedev

This is such an aggressive start. I said that already but he’s looking so un-Medvedev like at times here.

He’s rushing the net, playing serve and volley and because he’s winning points so quickly he wants to keep that pace up.

Breaking: DANIIL MEDVEDEV BREAKS

First blood to the Grand Slam winner.

It’s been a really aggressive start from Medvedev and he’s rightly being praised by Tim Henman and Nick Kyrgios in the commentary box.

This time Sinner raced into the net but cannot volley back a wicked passing shot on his backhand side.

Jannik Sinner* 1-1 (0-40) Daniil Medvedev

Now what are you made of, Jannik?

Medvedev can be very demonstrative on court but he’s brought an air of tranquility so far and perhaps even this early on his experience is showing.

Those long rallies favour the Russian so, so, so much.

Opportunity knocks here with three break points…

Clash of the Brands

Jokes aside… we’re a long way from that trophy leaving the case.

Jannik Sinner 1-0 (40-A) *Daniil Medvedev

Faults on his first serve are leaving Sinner with chances to attack on the secocnd serve and Medvedev has a lucky let cord to thank for setting up aa forehand winner.

Can’t be broken this early.

Jannik Sinner 1-0 (15-40) *Daniil Medvedev

An ace gets Medvedev going behind his own serve – and that could become a theme.

A second puts him 30-15 ahead and it is only when Sinner gets behind the return do points open up. Sinner is very, very good at closing points quickly.

He hasn’t got much interest in long rallies from the baseline (and I don’t blame him!)

Jannik Sinner* 0-0 (40-15) Daniil Medvedev

This has been a composed start from Jannik Sinner behind his own serve.

He’s had immense success so far in this tournament with wide serves but Sinner hasn’t really leant on that yet.

Couple of unforced errors have Sinner on the cusp of a first game.

Let’s play!

Here we go then… let’s go.

John McEnroe’s prediction

I think the coronation of Jannik Sinner is about to take place.

Safe to say many experts feel the stars are aligning for the young Gucci ambassador.

Italy holds its breath for Jannik Sinner

An Italian men’s Grand Slam champion? It’s been a long time in the making.

A grand stage for a Grand Slam. Over to you, Jannik.

Sinner wins the toss

Jannik Sinner has won the toss and elects to serve.

The youngster is keen to get ahead and stay ahead. Not a bad tactic at all.

Not a spare seat in the house

Lots of people are backing Jannik Sinner to win this… but the crowd are in and it’s busy!

Players are emerging

Both players are in the tunnel and are slowly making their way towards the court.

The nerves must be jangling, SURELY? I sure would be sweating buckets just getting ready to walk out.

An air of calmness for Daniil Medvedev

The lesser spotted Daniil Medvedev smile.

He fancies this one today – and who can blame him?

Nick Kyrgios steals the show

I tell you what, I’ve absolutely loved seeing this version of Nick Kyrgios.

He’s box office on the court – unquestionably – but he’s been a brilliant addition in the commentary box.

Safe to say he’s got a spot reserved for him for whenever he brings the curtain down on his playing career.

Stat attack

I brought you Daniil Medvedev’s (arduous) route to the final earlier… and it’s almost a record, only second to Marat Safin.

Can he get over the line, though? That’s the big question.

Not long until we find out.

Jannik Sinner may be a poster boy for Gucci but the Italian has proved on the tennis court he has the substance to back up the style.

Hear from a relieved Daniil Medvedev

Fighting back from two sets down against a big hitter like Alexander Zverev… it is safe to say relief was the overriding emotion for Daniil Medvedev!

Miles in the tank

By dropping only one set en route to today’s finale, it’s safe to say that Jannik Sinner is much the fresher.

He has been on court almost six hours less than his adversary in Melbourne.

Will that prove decisive? We’ll soon find out.

Daniil Medvedev’s route to the final

The one-time Grand Slam winner has had a tougher road to prosperity here in Melbourne… but it has only hardened his resolve for when the chips look to be down.

Here is how our two finalists stack up in numbers… and it doesn’t half suggest we’re in for a batttle here.

The head-to-head is heavily weighted in favour of the Russian.

Jannik Sinner’s journey to the final

There will be a new Australian Open champion crowned regardless of who wins this showstopper… but for Sinner, he is going for his first ever Grand Slam title.

19 years in the making

With Roger Federer retired, Rafa Nadal blighted by injury and Novak Djokovic defeated by rising star Sinner, it’s a changing of the guard for the Melbourne finale this time round.

YouTube didn’t even EXIST… in case anyone didn’t already feel old this morning.

Good morning!

And then there were two…

Good morning one and all. It’s Australian Open men’s singles final time – and to the surprise of many, it won’t feature Novak Djokovic.

The 10-time Australian Open winner was dumped out by Italian hotshot Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals, setting up a thriller against Daniil Medvedev.
